WELCOME TO SAVANNAH! You are a part of a village which has been the major village in northern Ashland County for nearly 190 years and currently is home to approximately
400 residents The Village government consists of the mayor, clerk/treasurer, six council members and three .of Public Affairs meiitbers. All positions are elected positions and are four-year terms. The Village also has a Zoning Code, zoning inspector and a board of zoning appeals. After one year of residency in the Village, residents are eligible to run for office. There is a current list of officials and their phone numbers at the Post Office.
The Village maintains the streets, storm sewers, catch basins, trees, ditches, street signs, and Academy Park within the village. There are many ordinances covering zoning, junk on property, vehicles (unlicensed or inoperable), trash, unmowed lawns, barking dogs, dogs on lease etc. The ordinances are enforced by the mayor and Council. Village appliance and trash pick-up is in May. Village garage sales are in June. The village woods is open on Saturdays in October for leaf disposal. The woods is also available for brush anytime. Leaf and brush burning is prohibited year round. Campfires and fire rings are permitted.
Water is provided by the Rural Lorain County Water Authority and is separate from the Village, contact Gary Liston at 419-962-4324. The Village sanitary sewer system is run by the Board of Public Affairs. Sign-up and payment of bills is handled by Village Clerk, Brenda Coffman at 419-962-4544. Storm sewers and runoff water problems are handled by the Council
Law enforcement is provided by the Ashland County Sheriff Department at 911. The Village does hire off-duty deputies to patrol U.S. Route 250 through town. Fire protection and emergency ambulance service are provided by the Savannah Volunteer Fire Company, also at 911. The Company is financed through levies and donations. The Fire Company hosts a chicken barbeque and car show in August. Volunteers are always needed and welcome. Local civic organizations include the Clear Creek Historical Society which opens the Biddinger House on Chambers Street several times a year with historical displays depicting life in the village. Voy Harmon is currently president and can be reached at 419-962-4842. The Savannah Lions Club holds periodic pancake breakfasts at the Town Hall to support many good causes. The Savannah V.F.W. organizes the annual Memorial Day parade which is always well attended and is one of the highlights of the community year. If you are a veteran, please call Arden Fitch at
